Georgia is known for very productive fly fishing.  Most of this water is within 2 hours of Atlanta, and makes it a popular destination for anglers. Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States was also the governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.  President Carter is an avid fly fisherman, and the state is home to some of the most beautiful trout water on the east coast.   

The Chattahoochee River

The Chattahoochee River is one of the most popular fly fishing destinations in Georgia. This river flows through the heart of Atlanta and offers the opportunity to catch wild rainbow and brown trout just minutes downtown. The Chattahoochee River is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout. The river can be accessed from several public access points, including several parks and recreation areas.

There are several access points in the northern Atlanta suburbs.  From Suwanee to Roswell, following down to interstates 285 and 75.  Stocking of this area begins in November and is catch and release until May.

The Toccoa River

The Toccoa River is another popular destination for fly fishing in Georgia. This river flows for 93 miles through the North Georgia mountains and is home to wild rainbow and brown trout. The Toccoa River is known for its beautiful scenery, including deep gorges, waterfalls, and forests. The river can be accessed from several public access points, including several boat launches and fishing access sites.

The Soque River

The Soque River is a top destination for fly fishing in North Georgia. This river flows for 29 miles through the Chattahoochee National Forest and is home to wild rainbow and brown trout, as well as stocked fish. The Soque River is known for its beautiful scenery and crystal-clear water, making it a great destination for sight fishing. The river can be accessed from several public access points, including several private lodges and guides.

The Savannah River

The Savannah River is a top destination for fly fishing in Georgia’s Coastal Plain. This river flows for 350 miles through Georgia and South Carolina and is home to a variety of fish species, including largemouth bass, catfish, and panfish. The Savannah River is known for its impressive runs of striped bass, which draw anglers from all over the country. The river can be accessed from several public access points, including several boat launches and fishing access sites.

The Oconee River

The Oconee River is another popular destination for fly fishing in Georgia. This river flows for 220 miles through central Georgia and is home to a variety of fish species, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, and catfish. The Smith Creek is a top destination for fly fishing in North Georgia. This creek flows for 15 miles through the Chattahoochee National Forest and is home to wild rainbow and brown trout. The Smith Creek is known for its challenging fishing conditions, including steep banks and tight cover, making it a great destination for experienced anglers. The creek can be accessed from several public access points, including several trails and parking areas.
